Yalqun Rozi (يالقۇن روزى, 亚力坤·肉孜, 牙里坤·肉孜) was one of the primary targets during the Chinese government’s war against the Uyghurs, which began in May 2014. He was arrested on October 6th, 2016, due to his main “crime” of publishing Uyghur textbooks required by the Department of Education.
Yalqun Rozi was born on March 4, 1966, in the city of Atush. He attended primary and junior high school in Aghu village from 1973 to 1980, and then studied at the No.1 high school in Qizilsu Prefecture from 1980 to 1982.
In 1987, he enrolled in the Faculty of Literature at Xinjiang University, and after graduation, Xinjiang People’s Radio Station hired him to work as a reporter. In January 1991, he started working as an editor in the Uyghur editorial department of Xinjiang Education Newspaper.
From 2005 onwards, Yalqun Rozi worked in the curriculum department of Xinjiang Education Publishing House, where he compiled and edited Uyghur language and literature textbooks. In October 2016, he was abducted, and in 2018, he was sentenced to 16 years in prison.
Yalqun Rozi has published several books, including “Golden Koldurma in Teklimakan,” “Mr. Memtili” (with Merzakhmet Seyit), “Awakening Ancestor’s Spirit” (Collection of Masterpieces of Uyghur Writers), “Why am I writing commentary” and “Secret of Clay Castle.” He translated some books into Uyghur, for example “Philosophy In Life“. He has also written numerous articles and reviews, which have been published in various magazines and newspapers.
Under Yalqun Rozi’s editorship, a series of Uyghur language and literature textbooks were published since 2002 as a state-supported project. Hundreds of Uyghur writers, painters, designers, and illustrators contributed to the project. Since the Chinese government built massive concentration camps and began to arbitrarily detain Uyghurs in East Turkistan, Uyghur intellectuals have been taken to concentration camps for no reason. Yalqun Rozi is one of the innocent Uyghur scholars who did not commit any crime.
