Omerjan Nuri is one of the Uyghur intellectuals who has been imprisoned since 2016. He was arrested on March 10, 2017, and sentenced to life imprisonment in 2018. Unfortunately, there has been no information about his current situation since then.
Omerjan Nuri was born to a family of teachers on April 25, 1968, in Karasay Village, Karakash County, Hotan Prefecture. He attended elementary and middle school in Karasay and Koychi villages, and high school at Karakash County No. 1 High School.
In 1986, he was admitted to the history department of Northeast Normal University (now called Northeast University) in Changchun, China, with excellent grades in the social science national exam, which he studied with economist Ilham Tohti. After completing two years of prerequisite studies at Central Nationalities University (now called Minzu University), he finished his four-year history degree program at Northeast Normal University.
In 1992, he began working at the Pedagogical School of Hotan Prefecture (or the current Pedagogical Institute of Hotan Prefecture). In 2000, he earned a master’s degree in history from Central National University in Beijing.
Omerjan Nuri has written numerous research papers, including “Uyghurs in Nushirvan Yavshef’s Works”, “A Story About the Migration of Turpan Uyghurs to the East in 1732”, “The Party of Young Kashgarians and the Andijan Incident”, “The Slander Against Kutluk Shawki“, “Ata Turk’s Uyghur Friend”, “Research on Some Issues in the Biography of Burhan Shahidi”, “The Chinese’s Account of Their Eating Uyghurs”, “Turks’ Myths of Birth from the Light”, “The use of ancient Uyghur script in Korea“, and other scientific articles. He has also translated several books from Japanese, Turkish, and Chinese, including “Research on the History of the Western Regions in the 8th-10th Century“, “The Legend of Attila“, “The Four Caliphs“, “Philosopher’s Words Series (Confucius Says)“, and “Sultan Alāʾ al-Dīn Eretna“. Omarjan co-published a book titled “Message of Six Cities” as well.
