Who is Abdulla Sulayman

Abdulla Sulayman is a Uyghur poet and literary scholar. He was born in April 1952 in Chira County, Hotan Prefecture. He graduated from the Department of Literature at Kashgar Teachers College in 1976. Beginning in 1979, he taught in the Department of Literature at Hotan Pedagogical College.

In 2018, he was arrested from his home in Hotan by local national security branch, and the later he got sentenced to 17 years in prison.

Before his detention, Abdulla Sulayman served as a member of the executive committee of the Xinjiang Writers Association.

His poetry was rewarded, received high praise from literary scholars and was widely appreciated by readers. His academic work was published in three books and twenty-one scholarly articles in various academic journals.

His published poetry collections include:

  • Yurungqash Nahshiliri (يورۇڭقاش ناخشىلىرى, Songs of the Yurungqash River) (1982)
  • Hayat Üchiliri (ھايات ئۈچىلىرى) (1984)
  • Bu Köchidin Ehmetjan Ötken (بۇ كوچىدىن ئەخمەتجان ئۆتكەن, Ahmetjan Once Walked This Street) (1986)
  • Bu Muhebbet, Bu Yashliq (بۇ مۇھەببەت، بۇ ياشلىق, This Love, This Youth) (1990)
  • Muhebbetning Közi Yoq (مۇھەببەتنىڭ كۆزى يوق, Love Is Blind) (1992)
  • Bir Adem, Bir Alem (بىر ئادەم، بىر ئالەم, One Person, One World) (1995)

He also published the multi-volume work Dunyada Birla Hoten Bar (دۇنيادا بىرلا خوتەن بار, There Is Only One Hotan in the World), consisting of 21 volumes, which were published successively between 2005 and 2011.

His book Bu Köchidin Ehmetjan Ötken is dedicated to Ehmetjan Qasimi, the leader of the Second East Turkistan Republic, which existed between 1944 and 1949 with its capital in Ghulja (Yining).

Abdulla Sulayman suffers from hypertension and diabetes. Friends and colleagues in exile have expressed serious concern about his health and well-being while he remains imprisoned.
