Ayshem Ehmet, a talented Uyghur female writer and journalist, was reportedly detained in 2016 and sentenced to 18 years in prison. Unfortunately, there is no further information about her since 2019, and her recent well-being is unknown. Her novel “Immortal Traces” was banned in 2016, although it was first published in 1987.

Born in Qumul in 1942, Ayshem Ehmet graduated from Xinjiang University and worked as a literature teacher at the No.1 Middle School of Qumul Prefecture, as well as an editor, chief editor, and office manager of “Qumul Newspaper” and “Qumul Literature” magazine.

She made great contributions to our literary affairs, overcoming various difficulties in her work life as the only female journalist in journalism at that time. She put great efforts into developing local literary magazines, organizing various literary creative activities, and opening writing courses around the magazine. She also organized a group of talented intellectuals.

In addition to being a contributing writer, Ayshem Ehmet was also a proud teacher and contributing editor who collected, sorted, and published folk literature.

She started publishing various masterpieces in her literary career since 1957, including stories such as “The Boss’s Opinion”, “Shame”, and “Grief” since the 1980s. Her novel “Immortal Traces” made her the first Uyghur female writer to become a proud novelist and was highly praised by readers.

In the 1990s, Ayshem Ehmet returned from a visit to the Soviet Union with new inspiration and published a series of works such as “The Spot on the Queen’s Mind”, “28 Years”, “When the Gloom Fallen”, and “Poisonous Laughter”, which made a significant impact. Some of her stories were also presented in newspapers, magazines, and collections published in Tashkent and Almaty.

Ayshem Ehmet was not only a talented writer and journalist but also an excellent mother who spent a lot of contributions and hard work on the education of Uyghur women. She wrote excellent books such as “Ladies’ Handbook”, “Girl’s Handbook”, and “Women’s Secrets”.
